The Society arose from the work initiated by the former Centre for Leavis Studies, which had its origins in the conference, Re-reading Leavis, held at Downing College Cambridge in September 2003, and in surrounding discussions. The Centre organised further meetings (see 'News and Events'), out of which work the decision to form the Society developed.

    This is a Call for Papers to interested members, past, present, and future of the Lawrence Society and of the Leavis Society for the Leavis-Lawrence Day at Eastwood Hall Hotel on Saturday September 8 2018 (to be followed in the evening by the D.H.Lawrence Birthday Memorial Lecture at the Hotel).

    The theme of the Day is 'Leavis's Landmark Work on Lawrence'. This will obviously include Leavis's 'D.H.Lawrence: Novelist' and 'Thought, Words and Creativity' as well as of course any essays written independently of these two books.

    This is an invitation to speak at a meeting of the Leavis Society on Friday 19 October 2018 at the University of York.

    No speakers have yet been enlisted.

    The invitation is not limiting in respect of subject but it is hoped that a range of critical speakers, whether on any of F.R. Leavis’s literary critiques or his wider convictions and thought, will stimulate reflection and discussion on his significance.

    A title and outline of your approach should be emailed to the secretary of the Leavis Society at by the end of May.
    It will passed to the Chair and members of the committee for the earliest possible decision.
